The exhibition takes its title from a painting by Gomez featuring the logo of the Déjà Vu strip club that operates next door to the gallery. This somewhat tangential piece is one of many examples of Sayre Gomez’s extraordinary handle of trompe-l’oeil painting techniques, which he utilizes to create a series of paintings depicting fences and closed doors and windows. The storefront, in particular, in its degraded state conveys of feeling of restriction and missed opportunity: the American dream unfulfilled.
