In a gallery space shared with Reena Spaulings in Los Angeles, Mexico City gallery House of GaGa presents a survey of notable works by stage director, filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist, Juan José Gurrola (1935–2007). A treasure trove of scripts, poems, photographs, letters, advertisements and other documents accompany important works like Monoblock (1969–1972), a performance chronicling the Bucareli Treaty in which the U.S. was rumored to have banned Mexico from manufacturing machinery and car parts. Also included in the exhibition are paintings from the 1984 “Ojo al parce” exhibition, in which Gurrola reproduced Philip Guston paintings in a “Mexicanized ‘bad painting’” style.
