Ruth Root

September 15November 12, 2017  |  356 Mission
Ruth Root takes inspiration from absolutely everywhere. Imagery from current events, quilt construction, patterns and colors from utilitarian objects, even other artist’s work (Sonia Delaunay and Frank Stella, for example)—all of which accumulate to make up a visual memory bank that materializes in fabrics that Root designs herself, which cover flat sheets of shaped Plexiglas hanging on the wall. In a subtle contrast, the painted Plexiglas creates a balance between manufactured and handmade qualities, placing the work somewhere between abstract painting and minimal sculpture.
