Though Sampled y Surveyed isn’t promoted as part of PST: LA/LA, it easily could be. Ruben Ochoa, an Angelino of Mexican American heritage, elevates everyday materials and environments to make connections to social structures and politics. This exhibition features works from 2007-2017 that use the symbol of the sidewalk as a starting point to explore how production process and maintenance in socially constructed spaces reveal inequalities, especially when pointing out what one sees and what is overlooked when commonplace. Concrete disguises stacked wood palettes, steel morphs, and an impressive manipulation of rebar fills the windows and climbs to the ceiling, composing a space that is both visually and physically engaging.
