It may seem as though major U.S. cities like New York and Los Angeles are never without a Mike Kelley exhibition, however this one is especially noteworthy since it is the first comprehensive survey of the Kandors series, created between 1999 and 2011. Kelley re-imagines the mythology of comic book superhero Superman and his birthplace in the city of Kandors as a means to explore loss, power, and the inconsistencies of memory. Several glass bell jars and cast resin miniature cities glow in various colors in the darkness of the Kandors Full Set (2005-2009) installation, conveying a feeling of the future from the perspective of the past. One can also have the thrill of visiting the inside of Superman’s fortress of solitude in Kandor 10B (Exploded Fortress of Solitude)—with the distinctive Mike Kelley angle, of course.
