Kerry James Marshall: "Mastry"

March 12July 3, 2017  |  MOCA Grand
As Marshall’s first retrospective in the United States, this massive exhibition lives up to the hype as being one of the most important shows for social and cultural criticism concerning the portrayal and inclusion of African Americans throughout history.

Using the canon of Art History, Marshall re-inserts the black figure into landscapes, portraits, and scenes of everyday life and places in a way that celebrates their beauty and their presence.

The exhibition presents an amazing range of paintings beginning in 1980, including several murals, and pieces from Marshall’s ongoing comic project titled Rhythm Mastr which he began in 1999.
