Gated Snare by Erik Frydenborg is a mash up between '80s graphics and '90s existential crisis in contrast with the shiny syntheticism of the cyber millennium. It’s difficult to dissect and specifically place in time the image references of the totems but they seem at once futuristic in a sci-fi retro kind of way while posing as some form of religious iconography. They’re linked by cables to objects on the ground that look like they could be accessories to musical equipment, game controllers, or forms of obsolete technology. Frydenborg’s works remind us how memories of visual languages of culture shift and distort over the decades, creating a sketchy and problematic composite of the past.
