Valentin Carron is a collector, craftsman and curator of the symbolic objects of our culture. He brings together antiques and the latest thing, as well as yesterday’s latest thing, already out-of-date. He takes these objects of Swiss and global culture, things that we produce and from which we then derive our identity, and sets them up as ready-made or hybrids with a twisted meaning.

Valentin Carron bears witness to the modes of cultural construction in an age of mass consumption. His work investigates the qualitative and decorative values assigned to the objects that surround us, as so many symptoms of our cultural system. Several of his works make allusions to aspects of popular, rural or alpine culture and reexamine ideas about the production (be it artisanal or industrial) of practical and symbolic values. Although there are recurrent references to popular culture, Carron’s works are more involved with the industrial period and its off-shoots. 

Evergreene a le grand plaisir de présenter “Land Crusader”, une exposition de Valentin Carron. Cet événement représente pour Evergreene une première collaboration avec ce jeune talent Suisse ;  Valentin Carron est né en 1976 en Suisse, il vie et travaille à Fully dans le canton du valais. 

Du 18 mars au 22 mai 2004 la galerie exposera les installations de Valentin Carron.

“Land Crusader”
Valentin Carron se fait le témoin des modes de constitution de la culture à l’ère de la consommation de masse. Son travail examine les valeurs qualitatives et décoratives attribuées aux objets qui nous entourent. Comme autant de symptôme de notre système culturel. Nombre de ses œuvres font allusion à certaine culture populaire, rurale ou alpine, en interrogeant les notions de production (artisanale, industrielle…), de valeur d’usage et de valeur symbolique. Si les référents à la culture populaire sont récurrents, ses œuvres ont d’avantage à voir avec la période industrielle et ses corollaires. Comme le souligne Huyghe, la naissance de l’industrie a eu pour conséquence la mise en doute de l’histoire linéaire et du progrès.  J.F
